Launching on June 14, Silver Shed is an artist-run, indoor-outdoor contemporary art project-space in New York. The opening project consists of three shows spanning seven months, featuring twenty-five internationally active artists. Organized as an opportunity for discussion, the project explores the digital landscape as a central paradigm of 21st century consciousness. The first show, Digital with Monument (June 14 August 16, 2008), takes its name from the seminal East Village gallery, International With Monument, founded by three artists in 1984. International With Monument embodied the politics of market and aesthetic practices for three seasons, marking a critical point for artists such as Halley, Koons, Steinbach, Prince, Simmons, Bickerton, and Charlesworth, among others. Inspired by such temporal currency and its lasting generative impact, Digital with Monument brings into question the functions and effects of digital methods in contemporary aesthetic production. The following show, Free Dimensionality (September 6 November 1, 2008), presents works involving notions of multi-dimensionality and free-space. This exhibition will be supplemented with a text titled Dimensionality in Art. The final show in the exhibition triptych, The Twentyfirst (November 15, 2008 January 10, 2009), looks at emerging values and ethics of 21st century artistic practice. A printed reader featuring conversations with the artists will be produced in conjunction with the show. More information on these shows and the participating artists will be provided in forthcoming press releases. Silver Shed will be open Tuesdays through Fridays, from 12:00 6:00 pm, and by appointment. |
